Abstract

A Healthy Interest in the Lives of Others is a collection of short stories about gossip, community, and the making of identity. Animated via the relational aspects of identity, the stories are autofiction as I define it, all asking the question: how we use language and story to make ourselves and our worlds? The characters’ messy and sometimes thwarted navigations are reflected in and exacerbated by the use of narrative constraints formulated early in composition process. The constraint must be connected to the content and capable of holding the story’s form.
