Abstract

This paper discusses the challenges to secure authentication and strategies for improving it. This paper is intended for a technical audience with a background or interest in information technology, telecommunications, and information security. The author reviews fundamental concepts in authentication and describes the weaknesses associated with basic password authentication. This paper then describes select current methods and technologies used in identification and authentication systems, as well as their benefits and weaknesses. From this, the author analyzes the concepts that can be applied to improving authentication mechanisms at a foundational level. The goal of this project is to add to the body of knowledge on the subject of secure authentication and to suggest areas for further research and development.
