Abstract
Researchers in multiculturalism have emphasized the importance of and advocated for implementing multicultural perspectives in education and training in psychology (Sue et al., 1992). While several guidelines were published by the American Psychological Association on education and training (APA, 2008; APA, 2017b; APA, 2019; APA, 2020), there have been reports of uneven experiences in pedagogy and implementation (Rogers, 2006). The current project explores formulating a training model for graduate-level education in psychological assessment, infusing multicultural and anti-racist perspectives. Although critical self-awareness of cultural biases that may impact assessment processes and clinical decision-making is considered an essential factor in cultivating multicultural competency (Sue et al., 1992; Williams et al., 2022), the literature also indicates that directly addressing issues of racism activates anxiety and discomfort in many, including psychologists (Acosta & Ackerman-Barger, 2017; DiAngelo, 2018; Smith et al., 2021). To facilitate growth in emotional resiliency vital to increasing self-reflection and awareness in students, despite the potential activation of anxiety, fear, and shame, the current project infuses the Collaborative and Therapeutic Assessment (CTA) model as a vehicle to invite lasting changes and shifts in students’ attitudes that align with multicultural and anti-racist perspectives.
