Abstract
Traumatic experiences can profoundly affect a person’s sense of self and perspective of the world in a way that can begin to impact daily functioning, occupational duties, relationships, and other areas of life. Trauma treatment often follows a three-phased approach that utilizes establishing safety, reprocessing experiences, and reconnection to ordinary life as the main functions of change and healing. While some research has begun considering collegiate athletes’ tendencies in collaborating with mental health resources, few have offered the framework and necessary implementations needed to consider their unique needs and barriers. This paper will not only outline the important research already conducted for both collegiate athletes’ considerations and trauma treatment in general but will take the step to further analyze and synthesize such information in a way that offers proposed considerations for utilizing a three-phased trauma treatment approach for collegiate athletes in the future. Suggestions are made specifically for collegiate athletes’ qualities including the athletic identity, time of season, and support systems to be incorporated into the already established trauma treatment modality.
