Abstract
This dissertation contains two parts: a poetry manuscript titled 4000 Years of Thinking and an afterword that explores the poetry of John Ashbery and Robert Creeley, and their influence on my work. In “Lyric Speech: John Ashbery and the Aesthetics of the Familiar,” I explore the aesthetics of speech, the cliché, and the familiar in Ashbery’s final two published-while-living collections. In “Creeley’s Sense,” I explore how Creeley’s poem “The Window” materializes perceptual attention and temporality via syntax. These two aesthetic categories, the spoken and the perceptual, are the foundation of my creative work.
