Abstract
People who pursue careers in the restaurant industry face a myriad of challenges that eliminate all but the most adaptable and tenacious individuals. An inexperienced and unreliable workforce, long hours, irregular schedules, and constant pressure to meet sales and profitability goals wash out those who, in the industry's popular slang, can't hang. The challenge of every restaurant company is to develop a stable, committed, and productive workforce. Restaurateurs are like a family with a distinct culture. Storytelling is one of the most nourishing and strengthening characteristics of restaurant organizations. Storytelling helps restaurateurs internalize their culture and make sense of the chaos that surrounds them, thus encouraging them to remain in this challenging industry.
