Abstract
Environmental regulations and stakeholder demands are challenging organizations to voluntarily disclose their environmental performance. These drivers, in conjunction with weak governmental enforcement, have led organizations to increase self-regulation of disclosure. Consequently, the frequency of illegal and unethical environmental claims has increased. This project analyzes environmental disclosures for seventeen organizations. In addition, this project identifies best management practices for legal and ethical environmental performance claims. Finally, this project provides recommendations for optimizing voluntary environmental performance disclosure.
