Abstract

This research assesses conditions for conducting an assessment of mammals and vegetation in the Mucusso Reserve of Southeast Angola. Information was gathered through informal interviews with local community members and Angolan government officials at National, Provincial and Communal levels, literature review, satellite imagery assessment and field work. Findings provide preliminary information on mammals and tree species that currently occur in the Reserve, and assess human resources availability, the capacity of relevant government institutions, and the accessibility of the Reserve with respect to road conditions and land mines. A mammal and vegetation assessment program is recommended. The results of the recommended program will provide the Government of Angola information to guide decisions about the protected area status of the Mucusso Reserve.
