Abstract
The waste management industry is comprised of companies engaged in the collection, treatment and disposal of waste materials. The industry is dominated by three companies; Waste Management, Allied Services and Republic Services. Regulatory and economic pressures are acting to reduce the volume of waste disposed through landfilling and incineration. If these companies are going to continue to be profitable with reduced waste volumes they will need to adopt an environmental strategy that maximizes their existing assets, develop partnerships with their customers and stakeholders, improve energy efficiency, and improve their organization's public image. Smaller companies and entrepreneurial enterprises are in an excellent position to carve niche markets for themselves by providing targeted alternatives to the service offerings of the major companies.
