Abstract

Always a Sentinel consists of a short story and two poems introduced by a reflective essay. The story and poems are about a son maturing in the shadow of a war-torn father suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD); they explore the themes of conquering fear through love and embarking on a voyage of personal transformation during a trip to Vietnam. The reflective essay is an analysis of the process I engaged in to educate myself about PTSD, which currently affects my own father, and how I applied the narrative structure known as the Hero's Journey, a sequence of myth-inspired storytelling paradigms, in a fictional short story to reflect a son's quest to cope with his father's illness.
