Abstract
Before the Heart Arrives is a novel about a child and a woman entangled in the personal, emotional, and bureaucratic complexities of foster care and adoption. The story itself is based on professional research and personal experience. Ultimately, the aim of this novel is to raise public awareness of the social injustices foster care children are often subjected to by a flawed governmental system that lacks effective advocacy programs. The reflective essay explores both the subject of foster care and the insights the author has gained on this highly charged topic through the creative writing process.
