Abstract
Yoga has been described as an ancient tradition that utilizes intentional movement, breathing, and mediation to foster holistic health. Although the yogic tradition dates back over 5,000 years, its prominence in current day society continues to grow. In the US alone, over 36 million citizens practice yoga to achieve optimal mental and physical health. The word yoga means to join or yoke together, thus emphasizing how the mind and body function as one (American Yoga Association, 2017). When this tradition is mixed with western medicine and psychological knowledge, it is considered to be yoga therapy. Yoga therapy is “the holistic treatment of various kinds of psychological or somatic dysfunctions ranging from back problems to emotional distress” (Feurestein, 1998, p. 1).
