Abstract
A recent survey by the University of Maryland's Program on International Policy Attitudes reveals that Americans are increasingly drawn to demagogic appeals for protectionism. The survey reports that the greatest increase in support for protectionism was among the very rich, who value high profits in industries that are protected from competition. The increase in protectionist sentiment among the poor was much more modest, for it is they who will have to pay the higher prices and suffer the loss of jobs that protectionism invariably brings.
