Abstract
It is apparent from the current congressional debate over immigration reform that many of our nation’s leaders, including President Bush, have forgotten the words of African-American leader Booker T. Washington.
In 1895, Washington was invited to speak at the Atlanta Exposition, a gathering of the nation’s leading business and political leaders. His subject was big business’ racist practice of refusing to hire African-Americans in favor of importing foreign white workers to fill available jobs.
