Abstract
This project will take a closer look at the interpersonal communication theories of social support and social capital and apply the concepts to what people expect from participation on Facebook. It examines how people gain social capital and rely on their social networks by examining the theory of social capital and what people expect from socially negotiated ties and relationships to answer whether it is valid to acquire social capital through social networking sites. It applies the basic concepts of these communication theories to the way people use technology to fulfill social needs. What motivates people to share so much information with each other? How do people decide what friends make the cut? How does this affect perspectives of self?
