Abstract
Along with exploding usage of the Internet has come strong advocacy for consumer health informatics (CHI) and providing patients direct, online access to their own personal health information (PHI). Although a laudable goal, the idea is a largely top-down approach coming from a traditional medical hierarchy in which doctors traditionally controlled not just care but also health information and communications. The Internet has allowed patients today to seize more control over their medical destiny through access to electronic communications and information. The goal of this project is to examine these bottom-up opportunities, challenges, issues and best practices to date in order to develop strategies to support these trends better.
