Abstract
Making a living as a musician is a tough gig, and making a living as a musician in Billings, Montana was nearly impossible ten years ago. During the past six years, the author has documented local music in Billings and watched its growth and evolution. Building on that existing knowledge base and extensive writings of the local music scene, the author produced a prologue and three chapters of a nonfiction book on the history of the local music scene in and around Billings. The chapters are heavily focused on personal stories crafted from interviews with musicians. Each chapter is a vignette into the particular musician's story, and collectively, these chapters begin to tell the story of music culture in Billings.
