Abstract
Processes for developing strategy by firms in the creative ecology often borrow from other sectors without considering uniquely local or sectorial needs. A literature review suggests that the challenges inherent in the creative ecology are complex and endemic to the sector. Primary research into how strategy formulation occurs at The Banff Centre, a large arts institution in Banff, Alberta, Canada, suggests that specific accommodations can be made to better align strategy formulation with internal needs and objectives. By making the generated framework and guide available through a Creative Commons license, other organizations contained within the creative ecology can improve the efficacy of their strategic processes, overall responsiveness, commitment of attention, and desired impact.
